Alley Fight Between Old and New
  • Alley Fight Between Old and New

  • This photo, showing an alley between H and I Streets contains several elements representing the dynamics of Chinatown today. The first element is the garage door, representing what is left of a Chinatown businesses. This element is countered by the red cones. These cones are used by one of several Chinatown buses -- low cost bus services connecting DC's Chinatown with Chinatowns in Philadelphia or New York. This represents the new wave of growing Chinatown-oriented businesses which hide in the alleys and empty lots next to modern mainstream commercial establishments. The final element is in the background. It is the teal and white Gallery Place building which has introduced gentrified lofts and establishments to tower over what remains of the old Chinatown.
